SuperPro CX Gives Way to Jensie

21 August 2015

“They said it couldn’t be done… they didn’t count on SuperPro!”

And what a masterstroke it is! Murphy Mack and SuperPro CX, née NorCal CX, have moved their first race venue from the originally planned Stafford Lake to Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park. The change is in part to accommodate promoters of the Jensie Gran Fondo of Marin. Nevertheless, Mack reports “it was an opportunity to take the Joaquin Park Oakland venue, something we’ve been eyeing for a while, and that trumps Stafford Lake.”

Four is a Popular Number

19 May 2015

SuperPro CX, née NorCal CX, is putting on a four-race series for 2015-16. The season opens at Stafford Lake on 10 October 2015. Branded under its new name, the one fewer event than last year’s series is less likely to run into conflicts with a season that is already becoming busy. Murphy Mack also revealed venues for the other events, in the October-heavy calendar, as Lion of Fairfax (17 October), Kitten of Vallejo (24 October), and Lake Cunningham (12 December).

One always finds something unique and challenging at a SuperPro race. There is the Belgium Farm Wall, a series staple, but other obstacles that harken back to steeplechasing included a course that criss-crosses streams and the infamous Cesspool of Filth. Murphy Mack and his cohorts can be expected to string together more courses with an imaginative means to make the racing that much harder.

SupCat NorCal CX Finale Postponed

12 December 2014

Due to catch-basin hydrodynamics, the San Jose SupCat race is postponed until 17 January 2015. The finale to the SuperPro 2014 NorCal Cyclocross Series was all set to take advantage of the recent rains. In an outcome akin to “be careful what you wish for”, Lake Cunningham Park is closed for excessive run-off.

The next regional events are Fresno’s Homegrown Cyclocross Series and the District Championships in Lodi. Both hold races on Sunday, 14 December 2014.

Dalton, Judelson, and Shevock Conquer the Creeks

Judelson Beginning to Assert his Dominance

7 December 2014

Yesterday’s Kitten of Vallejo at Dan Foley Park saw a reconstruction from some of the very historic early days of cyclocross, or steeplechasing. The SuperPro 2014 NorCal Cyclocross Series is well renowned for extraordinary courses that add that extra challenge to bicycle racing. And the Kitten was in keeping with Murphy Mack’s reputation as the course both criss-crossed one creek multiple times and ran along another. As though high-stepping through shallow puddles was insufficient, plank barriers dammed the flowing water, courtesy of the recent rains, to create swollen, deep muddy pools.

This was all on top of “Wood Chip Hill”, a climb that made running a sensible option if only to avoid clogging up the bicycle with organic matter. Other sections of the course saw a short, steep run-up, a technical tortuosity section, that may have convinced many that Murphy Mack owns stock in barricade tape, and power-sapping grassy hill climbs.

The race for Elite Men turned into a straight-forward affair for Max Judelson (Rock Lobster/Voler/Steven’s Creek BMW/HRS) as he simply dominated from the first lap. Judelson was the first to reach the top of Wood Chip Hill and he just simply expanded his gap from there. The only flaw in his race-day was missing out on a cash prize for equalling his last lap time in an extra circuit. Judelson gave it a shot and his all but rolled a tire.

October Openers

3 October 2014

October sees four series open their accounts for NorCal Nevada cyclocross in 2014-15. First up is Murphy Mack and SuperPro’s NCCX series on 4 October. Dan Foley Park in Vallejo is a venue change but features the same locale as the Kitten later in the season. After the cyclocross, Chef Ciano’s Tacoceria is a terrific enough reason for racers and spectators to attend.
