Last Saturday’s West Sacramento Cyclocross Grand Prix, presented by Cederon, was an outstanding reflection of the NorCal Nevada cyclocross community. The City of West Sacramento, Matt Hargrove, and NorCal CX organizers worked hard to put on this festival-event. Sponsors, food trucks, music bands, local businesses, and many, many individuals shed blood for the cause. And, the day saw nearly 400 starts across the categories of competitive racing.

This brand new team had fifteen of its 23 members put their rubber down onto the WSCXGP course, including co-founders JT Teerlink and Audrey Biehle racing in Elite Women. Many members, whether they raced or not, volunteered at the event. The team itself spans the entire gamut of categories from Master 35+ to single speed to Juniors. Riana Young and Parker Miller each earned podium finishes that day for the Under-19 and Under-15 Junior Women’s races, respectively.
Dirt Birds Press Release
Sacramento, CA 8/25/2015:
A new women’s specific cyclocross team, Dirt Birds, has hatched in the Sacramento area. Created with the goal of “more women racing more often,” the new team has 23 riders that come from a variety of backgrounds and bike experience. Co-founders Audrey Biehle and JT Teerlink wanted, “to build on the growing cyclocross community in Sacramento in a way that fosters more women racing” says Teerlink. The team hopes to encourage more women to get involved in cyclocross and cycling in general through clinics, events, and camaraderie. “Cycling can be an intimidating, male dominated environment,” Biehle says, “but when you are part of an all women’s team, you feel more welcome and are more likely to show up to races and rides.” The ladies have already made good on one goal and hosted a successful ‘cross clinic with the help of Squid Bikes Pro racer Emily Kachorek.

Many may find it hard to recall a time without their tour de force as the Berry Red clad riders are perennial race winners and this year tout three former National Champions.

Take a gander at the About Team Caletti web page and one is greeted with a gaggle of smiling and laughing faces, quizzical looks, doffing of caps, plus a few other antics squeezed into a fair number of still frames. This a group of cyclocross racers “coming into what they want to be as a team,” describes Emery Wedel, himself a single speeder who can really fly over the boards. “[We are] a fairly tight-knit group of friends that came together through the team. It’s a core group of riders that just like to race and have a good time.”
