This coming weekend’s cyclocross racing, in the NorCal Nevada region, will take place far and wide. The Sagebrush Cyclocross Series holds its event at Davis Creek Park, New Washoe City on Saturday, 14 November. Both the Surf City Cyclo-X and Sacramento Cyclocross Series hold races on the Sunday.
Another big event is the 3-day Santa Rosa Cup CX. In part to find a formula for providing an attractive event for cyclocross racers, and following the lead of other 3-day events such as Jingle ‘Cross, the race for the Cup begins on Friday, 13 November. Juniors kick the weekend into gear with a 5pm start at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Racing continues into the night with the last start for All A Men at 8:15pm.
Saturday sees the same County Fairgrounds venue but with a course change. The finale on Sunday moves to Spring Lake Regional Park, a return for the venue last used for cyclocross in 2011. Racing on the Saturday and Sunday begins at 8:30am. Series crowns go to entrants of all 3 days with the tie-breaker going to the highest placing on the last day. The recent rains will dampen the dust and bring in new conditions for terrain and traction. This will be more so as the locales are certain to receive a good share of the rain.

Tom Simpson is announcing 2015 is his and Alec’s last season running the Bay Area Super Prestige cyclocross races. Except for the CCCP race at Coyote Point, that will continue as a stand-alone event, Simpson says he will “bow out of event promotion”. The future for the remaining events in the group go over to Murphy Mack and SuperPro CX. “SuperPro Racing will provide the manpower to keep Tom and Alec Simpson’s BASP rolling on just as it is,” reported Mack by e-mail. “Nothing is changing, it is BASP as BASP has always been BASP.”

The upcoming weekend is busy with four events from across the region’s east to west span. Sagebrush CX rolls in on Saturday (24 October) with their at-altitude Truckee Bike Park venue. USAC points are available. To get the festivities off well, there is a free ‘cross clinic in the morning led by Dave Eastwood. Registration opens and the clinic begins at 9am with the first race underway at 10am. The course will include more grass should the frost stay away!
Also this Saturday, SuperPro CX returns to Dan Foley Park with the Vallejo Day Race. The course runs closer to Lake Chabot than last week’s night race but will clamber up long uphill sections. There is plenty of green along the course and, going by last Saturday’s event, some of that grass is spongy. Last year saw the course run through massive swaths of water but this year the forecast is dry and mostly sunny.

The SuperPro CX course at tomorrow’s Joaquin Miller Park is 1.5 miles of hard riding with plenty of elevation changes up and down. The area for the finish line looked tranquil this morning but come the ‘morrow the rest of the course is chock full of challenges and hard riding. The terrain changes between paved road, grassy meadow, and hard-packed dirt. In amongst that are the occasional knobby rock protruding through the surface, loose sections of built-up dirt and plant debris, and soft, well-worn turns. Soft-enough ground to reveal clandestine pre-rides that followed the course map posted on the race’s web page.

The SuperPro Racing 2015 Cyclocross Series begins this coming Saturday and, in something of a coup, the venue is Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland. Known for his intention to always build hard ‘cross courses, and some of the most daring obstacles in NorCal Nevada, Murphy Mack and SuperPro Racing now have an excellent canvas for their latest creation.
A map of the course is posted for the Oakland Hills venue but this is certainly one to experience much closer and in person. This former home of the poet holds spectacular views that the forecasted sunny day can only enhance.
Juniors at 8:20am begin the day’s staging and racing.

Along with the recently announced Nevada State Cyclocross Championships set for 12 December, there are a few other changes to the season’s calendar.
SuperPro racing moved their 17 October event from Fairfax to Dan Foley Park in Vallejo. Racing will go out into the night. Details appear on the series webpage. Juniors begin the affair at 2:30pm. Elite Women and Elite Men race off the line at 6:45pm and 7:45pm, respectively. The last race of the night is for Men B beginning at 9:00pm.
Surf City announced the venues to go along with their race dates. The best information about locales appears at the webpage for registration and the Fit and Filthy Calendar, although shortly before press time the series website was undergoing an update.
On their web page, Central Coast posted a new race for 11 October at Manzanita Park in Prunedale. Finally, Fresno County Cyclocross (FCCX) is down to a single event. It is the 20 December race at Lost Lake in Friant. Final permitting is approved and the race receives a sanction from USAC.
