Surf City Goes Four
13 May 2015
Surf City Cyclo-X has dates for the upcoming 2015-16 season of cyclocross. There are four events beginning with the Halloween race on 25 October. Organizers have plans for a clinic on 24 October with possibly another for 26 September, depending upon demand.
And for the big announcement – Mary Perez reports that for the extra race, over last year’s calendar, 29 November 2015 will see Surf City host the NorCalNevada District Championships! A first for SCCX. The event may fall outside of earning points for the regular series and race fees are likely to increase for the Championships, because of USAC costs. The regular series races remain at $35.
The resurgent Surf City series is continuing a long tradition of cyclocross in the region. Mary Perez has definitely inspired more impetus to the series, along with Ben Jacques-Maynes, Brock Dickie, David Crum, and many, many others. One of the early organizers, in Jeff Clark, remains an integral part of this and other NorCal cyclocross events.
Clark wrote by e-mail that “People who took our survey last season made comments that they’d like to see a bigger series, and according to Mary [Perez], some of the sponsors want the same. I’d personally like to see it grow back to five, though squeezing that into the modern NorCal calendar would be tough.” With hope, the additional date on Surf City’s calendar is a portent of further growth in the region’s cyclocross.
