Expanding ‘Cross Season – Rockville Bike CycloCross
29 June 2014
In the 2013-14 season, the Northern California, Northern Nevada region had a cyclocross racing series that ran predominantly in January. Rockville Bike Cyclocross held its first race on 29 December 2013 with the last of its season’s seven Sundays on 9 February 2014. There were well over fifty competitors across three categories that participated…fifty keen cyclocrossers that like a local race but perhaps also for whom CX365 is the new mantra.
The Rockville Bike web site bills the series as a “blast on two wheels”. The modest entry fee allows a racer to compete in one or all three categories.
Race organizers John Silva and Esther Pryor’s motivation is in part promotion of their bike shop but mostly grew out of providing local low-key cyclocross and advocacy for bicycle racing. Their efforts at starting an IMBA-sanctioned mountain bike club helped to save The Rockville Hills Regional Park through lobbying.
There is hope to grow the series further and perhaps even consider a North Bay Championship Series. For this coming season, Silva and Pryor hope to hold both a fall series along with their late-season races. This will become their third year for putting on ‘cross races. Upcoming dates should be available shortly after coordinating with other series and once permissions are in place from the Solano Community College venue in Fairfield.
