CX BAR Standings Race Toward Conclusion
14 December 2012
The previous weekend saw racing at BASP-Coyote Point, SacCX-Howard Park, and the Fresno-based Homegrown Cyclocross Series; riders saw terrific weather that sometimes appears in a California December. The SacCX venue had excellent muddy conditions for the fit and filthy. The early races at BASP had riders contending with high tide encroaching onto the signature beach run.
Three of the five remaining events are on tap this coming weekend. The Santa Rosa Cup CX finale is at Windsor Oaks Winery near Healdsburg on Saturday. SacCX has its series finale at Laguna Del Sol in Winton, home of last season’s NorCal Naked ‘Cross Race.
Surf City Cyclo-X will run at the Watsonville Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. In addition to ending its season, the event will also raise funds that help send Tobin Ortenblad to EuroCross Camp as a U23 rider.
CX BAR Standings
The big change this past weekend is in the standings for Men A. Kieth Hillier (Team Rambuski Law) has taken over the top position after second place finishes at Manzanita Park and Coyote Point. Scott Chapin (Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster) falls to second with his efforts away racing UCI in Los Angeles and USGP in Bend, Oregon. The Rock Lobster rider is still in with a chance and this weekend’s racing will be very telling for the final outcome.
There are very tight races in the Master categories. Six points cover Janel Lodge (Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster), Janie Dalton (Missing Link/Third Rail), and Beverley Chaney (Team Roaring Mouse) for Master Women 35+. These three riders have occupied top category places for much of the season and they will likely take it to the last race of the season to decide matters.
For Master Men 45+ B there are four riders that could take the BAR crown. Benoit Dubuisson (Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster) and Eric Lowe (HUP United) currently share the lead. CoreTechs Cycling Team pair of Miles Keep and David Tripier sit close behind and in with a definite chance.
Henry Kramer (California Giant/Specialized) and Tim Lydon (SJBC) are in a furious battle for Master Men 45+ A. Neither rider has finished outside the top five this season and the pair have gone head-to-head several times. With the remaining schedule and just three points separating Lydon and Kramer, this challenge may come down to appearances as well as race results.
Another Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster rider, in Zac Stanley, leads a close race for Master Men 35+ B. Justin Hintz (Team Mad Cat) trails Stanley by only five points. These two riders rarely race against each other as Hintz makes appearances mostly at SacCX. Stanley’s wider ranging repertoire in venues may give him the edge.
The Master Men 35+ A category has Don Myrah (ibis/Buy-cell.com) leading from two California Giant Berry Farm/Specialized riders in Brian Finnerty and Justin Robinson. Only six points cover the three. Myrah’s prolific racing is his asset against the very stiff competition this season. Robinson has eight wins and Finnerty is a consistent top-five finisher; the final CCCX event in January is the likely race to settle this category.
