In Came the Rains
21 November 2012
The weather did its “thing” and cyclocross riders did theirs this past weekend. Whilst not the mud fests of yore, there was champion racing.
Despite the small demographics over in Neveda, the Sagebrush Cyclocross Series put on a nifty little race at Davis Creek Park; the main feature of the course was a big run up. Most of the racing went out under overcast skies with some drizzle or light rain. The top category men saw the heaviest downpour but were treated to a rainbow at race’s end. Jude Mayne (Velo Reno) won the race with a dominating performance to warm up for his effort the next day. Erica Greif was the winner for Women’s A in her own determined way. For readers that are unfamiliar with the Sagebrush Cyclocross Series, Katerina Nash (Team Luna Pro) is known to make an occasional appearance including a win at the District Championships in 2010.
The Santa Rosa Cup CX saw a good amount of sticky mud on the course early…possibly adding double the weight of wheels for some riders. The terrain improved with racing and the appearance of the sun. Late in the day, the rain turned the Men’s A race into a difficult slippery affair. Elle Anderson (Ladies First Racing) won against a strong Women’s A field that included Ellen Sherrill (Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster) and Kristin Drumm. Keith Hillier (Team Rambsuki Law) and Scott Chapin (Bicycle Bluebook.HRS/Rock Lobster) battled early in the race for Men A with Hillier taking the winner’s reward.
It was a beautiful and sunny day at the Lange Twins Winery and the Sacramento Cyclocross Series; with wine and paella at this venue, this day, everything made for a an excellent ‘cross event. The course started off with a very muddy off-camber section. Some of the strongest riders early had to power through despite the difficulty in keeping both wheels in line. The course quickly changed and by the next race running became the slowest way through.
In the race for Master Women 35+, Lauren Liden (Delta Velo/Michael David Winery) took an impressive win against Linda Elgart (Webcor/Alto Velo), although the Webcor racer had not seen much racing action this season. Emily Kachorek (TBB.CX) and Marja-Liisa Magnuson (Kinetic Cycles) contested first place early in Women’s A until Magnuson put her head down; Kachorek was racing her first muddy cyclocross race leaving the Kinetic Cycles rider to take the win. Max Jenkins (Folsom Bikes) took his opportunities to win the Men’s A race, first against a train of four and then a battling James Williams (Adventure’s Edge). Jude Mayne (Velo Reno) rode to an impressive second-place after racing hard the day before.
Surf City Cyclo-X raced at the Watsonville Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds with some significant wet mud. The Jaques-Mayniacs were on hand, as well as Scott Chapin and Aaron Bradford (Bicycle Bluebook/HRS/Rock Lobster) but it was Tobin Ortenbald to the fore, winning Men A by nearly 28 seconds. Elle Anderson was the winner in another strong Women’s A field of Karen Brems (Team Rambuski Law), Kerry Barnholt-Bonar, Emily Thruston (Team Rambuski Law), and Sarah Jordan.
